The Innovative Materials of Aeron Chairs
The Aeron chair’s suspension seat and back are made from Herman Miller’s innovative 8Z Pellicle textile, available in various colours including Onyx, Carbon, Graphite, and Mineral. This unique fabric is composed of 56% elastomeric and 44% polyester, a blend that provides exceptional comfort, flexibility, and durability. The elastomeric fibers allow the textile to stretch and adapt to movement, while the polyester ensures robustness against daily wear.
Lightfastness
Rated at Grade 4 for 160 hours, this textile offers solid lightfastness, meaning it holds up well under exposure to sunlight. In practical terms, it means the colour is resistant to fading and should keep its original look even in brightly lit areas.
Flammability
Safety is a top priority, and this fabric passes key fire safety standards like CA TB 117-2013 and NFPA 260. These certifications ensure the fabric is more resistant to ignition, so it’s suited for both residential and commercial spaces with fire safety requirements.
Abrasion Resistance
The Wyzenbeek abrasion rating of 200,000 double rubs is impressive and indicates how well this fabric stands up to wear. To put it simply, a double rub measures the fabric’s resistance to repeated friction. For context, a typical household fabric might only need around 15,000–30,000 double rubs, so 200,000 means it’s ready for high-traffic, heavy-duty use.
Sustainability
On the eco front, this fabric checks many boxes. It’s PFAS-free (avoiding the controversial “forever chemicals”), PVC-free (better for the environment), and FR-free, meaning no additional flame retardants. It’s also certified SCS Indoor Advantage Gold for good indoor air quality, making it a safer choice for spaces where people spend long periods.
