Office Chairs for Back Pain

Sitting incorrectly in front of your computer for hours on end could lead to serious back pain, which is why it’s important to ensure you have the right back care office  chair.

Our bodies are designed in a way that they can only tolerate being in one position for only a short period of time before needing to adjust and this is completely natural.

There are a handful of factors you can address in order to improve the setup of your workstation.

Monitor, keyboard and mouse positioning is crucial, but selecting the correct posture chair is absolutely essential.

Legally, office chairs must meet a minimum standard, but does this mean you’ll automatically find the ideal chair for your needs? The simple answer is no.

If you are looking for an office chair for back pain, we have a wide variety of stylish, ergonomic back care office chairs that can help to alleviate any back problems.

Types of Back Pain

Aches and pains which centre on the back can be classified in two different ways; either by duration or by type.

By Duration:

  • Acute back pain – This comes in sudden sharp bouts and usually lasts no longer than 6 weeks. This is considered temporary and is usually associated with a minor injury or strain.
  • Subacute back pain – This lasts between 6 weeks and 3 months and can be caused by a more serious injury affecting the ligaments and muscle tissue around the bones.
  • Chronic back pain – This can be a persistent pain, or it can be recurring, but either way, back issues that last for more than 3 months are considered chronic. This type of pain can have a significant impact on daily lives, affecting mobility and the persons ability to carry out particular tasks.

In all instances, it is important to keep the back supported to reduce strain. This provides the circumstances for an improved rest and recovery rate. Putting the back under strain while it is trying to recover can prolong issues and cause further damage.

By Type:

  • Axial Pain – This type of pain is confined to a specific area and may feel sharp, dull, throbbing, or persistent. It is often linked to muscle strains, issues with the facet joints, or problems with spinal discs.
  • Referred Pain – Pain that originates in one part of the body but is experienced in a different location. It is typically described as a dull, aching sensation and may result from conditions such as degenerative disc disease.
  • Radicular Pain – This pain travels along the path of a spinal nerve as it exits the spinal column. Often described as a burning or electric shock-like sensation, it is usually caused by nerve compression or inflammation, which can lead to conditions like sciatica or radiculopathy.
  • Nonspecific Back Pain – The most common form of back pain, where no clear cause can be identified. It may arise from minor strains in the muscles or ligaments, as well as mild issues with the discs or facet joints.
  • Specific Back Pain – This type of back pain is attributed to a known medical condition, such as a herniated disc, spinal stenosis, or a spinal fracture.

While no office chair can outright cure back pain, the principles behind orthopedic chairs are that they help the body repair itself by reducing strain. In terms of chronic pain (which might be a life-long condition), chairs which support the lumbar and spine, alleviate aches and pains by reducing pressure points and distributing weight more evenly.

Preventing Lower Back Pain

Using a supportive office chair as a preventative measure, is just as important as being used to alleviate an existing issue. Lower back pain is often the result of sitting for long periods of time, but allowing the lumbar to take the strain unnecessarily. You should always ensure that you’re sitting at the correct height for the desk that you’re using. Along with preventing back strain, this can also prevent RSI (repetitive strain injury) if using a mouse or keyword as part of your work.

Which Chair to Choose?

A fine example of this is the Orangebox Joy Occupational Health Chair, a video of which can be seen here.

The Oxangebox Flo chair has won the FIRA Ergonomics Excellent Award, a recognition for companies who design and manufacture ergonomically outstanding products, especially those that exceed the requirements of British and European Standards, further confirming the chair’s credentials.

The Torasen Orthopeadica Back Care range comes with a variety of extras. Features such as pump-up lumbar support, coccyx cut-outs and tilting backs help promote excellent ergonomics for the user.
