History of the Eames Aluminium Group Chair
This chair was originally commissioned in 1958 for the private residence of J. Irwin Miller, an American industrialist, patron of contemporary architecture and collector of modern art. Initially the design was to provide outdoor seating at his home in Columbus Indiana, with the concept then called the Indoor-Outdoor Group. As the original design by Charles and Ray Eames, Don Albinson and Robert Staples, ultimately failed as outdoor furniture, it went through various iterations and was renamed the Eames Aluminium Group by 1959.
From Garden Furniture to Office Seating
The aluminium elements of the Eames Aluminium Group Chair were produced with sand casts and this concept remained. However the original mesh seat and back were eventually replaced in 1969 with a ‘soft pad’ and cushions making it more suitable and comfortable for indoor use. The pedestal base was upgraded from 4 legs to 5 legs, providing extra stability.
Eames Aluminium Group Variations
Currently there are 4 versions of the Aluminium Group produced by Herman-Miller in the US (and Vitra in Europe): including the Dining Side Chair, Management Chair, Executive Chair and Lounge Chair.
Mastermind Quiz Show Chair
As reported by The Independent, the Eames Aluminium Group Chair with the ‘soft pad’ is used as the iconic Contender’s Chair on the quiz show Mastermind.
You can order your very own ‘Mastermind Chair’ from Office Chairs UK. Make sure you choose ‘Powder coated in Deep Black’ as the frame and base finish.
