Should I chose a Mesh or Triflex Back Herman Miller Verus Office Chair?

So you have done some research and possibly seen the Which! magazine article reviewing the Herman Miller Verus chair in a very positive light. Now you have discovered that there are two options, one with a mesh back and one with a Triflex Polymer back and which one should you choose?

In this blog we will use the benefit of our experience to steer you in the right direction to help you get the most out of your new Verus chair.

Which Verus chair is the most comfortable?

This really depends on personal preference. Do you prefer a softer backrest or one with more support? Both the Mesh back and Triflex Verus can be specified with adjustable sacral supports which will give you more support but we would say that the Triflex chair is the most supportive of the two. The Triflex chair has not outside frame so it will enable you to twist more naturally in the chair whereas this is a bit more restricted with the mesh back as it has a fairly rigid frame.

The mesh back chair is very breathable and will mould to the shape of your back. The Triflex chair has various holes in the backrest to enable better movement and also some ventilation and is also designed to support your back at every position.

What Herman Miller Verus mechanism should I choose?

This can be a bit confusing. We have listed out the three Verus mechanisms so that you can compare:

  1. Synchronous with tilt limier and seat angle features on our Verus Fully Loaded chairs. You should have the chair moving backwards and forwards with you as you change your posture. You can limit the amount of recline with the travel limiter so that you can have the chair positioned upright or allow it to move in varying degrees of recline until it stops where you set it. You can set the recline tension by turning the adjuster clockwise or anti-clockwise to tighten or loosen the recline tension to suit your body weight. The chair also feature a forward seat angle which you can turn on and off as required. This allows you if you are leaning forward using a keyboard to have the front of the seat drop slightly lower than the back. This creates a more upright posture which is great for your back and stops you slouching.
  2. Synchronous with tilt limiter does all of the above except it does not have the forward tilt option.
  3. Semi synchronous with tilt limiter has the same tilt limiter as option 1 but instead of adjusting the recline tension manually it does it automatically for you. This is especially useful if more than one person will use the chair as it will always be set at the correct tension for their body weight. This option also does not have the forward tilt.

What Testing Certification does the Verus chair have?

  1. BS EN 1335-1:2020 – Office Furniture – Office Work Chair – Dimensions – Determination of Dimensions
  2. BS EN 1335-2:2018 – Office Furniture – Office Work Chair – Safety Requirements
  3. BS EN ISO 9241-5:2024 – Ergonomic requirements for office work with visual display terminals (VDTs) – Part 5: Workstation layout and postural requirements
  4. BS EN 16139:2013 – Test Level 1 – Furniture – Strength, durability and safety

Office Chairs in the UK are generally tested by FIRA
