“With people on leave and temperatures outside rising, it can be difficult to concentrate if you are still at work during school summer holidays. More work and less company can make for a difficult work environment. It’s natural to feel a little sluggish in the heat, especially if you’re still at home in front of your screens. So we’ve put together some tips on how to survive the summer holiday period when still in a busy workplace.
Stay Cool
Whether you’re at home or in the office, you should make sure you’re doing everything you can to combat the heat. The sun can be nice, but not always when you’re sat in front of your laptop screen trying to concentrate! Get out your summer wardrobe, making sure it’s appropriate for the workplace if you’re travelling to the office, and get yourself a cold drink. Stay hydrated – a headache due to a lack of fluids will not help your ability to concentrate. If you have a fan, point it in your direction and enjoy the breeze – if you don’t, why not get one? Even a small USB fan will allow a little more airflow through your home office.

Work Outside
This is a great way to ensure you’re making the most of the good weather while you’re working. While it might seem this is only possible at home, talk to your employer. If you are lucky enough to have an outside space at your office, this could be an option, even just for a part of every day. Making sure you’re hydrated and with adequate UV protection, having an outside set-up could lift your spirits as you get your work done.
Make sure your home office is as well equipped as possible with our range of home office furniture to suit your every need.
Set boundaries
Everyone knows that summer holidays panic of too much work and not enough colleagues. With many people on leave and holiday during the school summer holidays, it can make your workload heavier. While you get through this during your work hours, it’s more important than ever that you leave your stress behind when you log off. Your evenings and weekends are yours, so you should be doing your best to relax and enjoy your summer while others are enjoying theirs. This doesn’t have to be sat around sweating – make plans, go to the beach, meet people for evening walks. Make your spare time quality time with your friends and loved ones this summer.
Get Together
With fewer colleagues in the office, real or virtual, morale might take a little hit. Lower morale can mean lower productivity and a higher chance for burn-out. To combat this, it’s a good idea to bring people together – suggest to your boss that the team get together more for brainstorms, meetings or just casual chats. They don’t have to be compulsory but giving people the option might help to break up their busy work-days.
Plan Time for You
Hearing about other people going on holiday might feel demotivating, and that’s completely normal. Instead of letting it affect your motivation levels, let it inspire you. Look at your holiday allowances and start thinking about your plans. Having something to look forward to in the future, however long off your break is, can make working hard a lot easier. Get counting down to your next adventure or relaxation holiday.”
