Chair mechanisms explained

“Automatic Seat and Back Tilt
Movement throughout a day is key to a healthy lifestlye. This mechanism allows you to move freely and comfortably with minimal effort setting tension controls etc. as the chair will automatically adjust itself to suit you.

Body Balance
As with the above mechanism, the chair weighs you and adjusts the movement tension accordingly.

Independent Seat and Back Mechanism
This mechanism allows you to independently adjust the seat tilt angle and the back recline angle and fix these in position if required.

Knee Tilt
Instead of the gas lift being positioned in the center of the chair seat it is placed further forward, which means that the chair will tilt more towards your knees and is generally used on executive seating so that a more reclined position can be achieved.

Standard Back Tilt
The seat is static, but the back can be set at various angles of recline.

Standard Synchronised
The most popular mechanism for office seating allows the user to have the chair moving with them with the seat and back moving together generally in a 1:2 ratio. Many mechanisms also allow the chair to be locked in a reclined position.

Tilt Mechanisms
Chairs can have a standard reclining tilt mechanism and also a forward tilt mechanism, which is suitable for long hours of keyboard work as your spine will be corrected and resume its natural S-curve.

Height adjustable backrest
The backrest can be set at various heights to enable the inbuilt lumbar curve to be set individually for the user.

Adjustable Lumbar Support
Many chairs have inbuilt lumbar curves as above, which can be adjusted via the backrest height. Some have individual lumbar supports that adjust backwards and forwards as well as up and down.

Arms: Fixed
Generally loop shaped arms, which take the weight of your arms throughout a day, which helps to alleviate neck and shoulder pain.

Arms: Height Adjustable
As above but generally T-shaped and more customizable for the user to enable correct positioning for your frame.

Arms: Height and Pivot Adjustable
As above but with the addition of arm pads that pivot inwards making it easier to rest your arms whilst typing.

Arms: Height and Width Adjustable
Arms that can be width adjusted for the larger framed person.

Arms: Multi-Adjustable
These arms are usually height, width, depth adjustable and sometimes also pivoting (please check descriptions for each individual chair).

Medium back
A standard back for the average height user (please check specifications for each individual chair).

High back
For those wanting more support at shoulder level, taller users or those wanting to make more of a statement with their chair (please check specifications for each individual chair).

Soft castors
Special casters for use on hard floors such as wood.

Hard castors
Standard castors for use on carpet or carpet tiles.”
