The Herman Miller Embody Chair is the result of decades of thoughtful research, experimentation, and human-centred design.
Developed by Jeff Weber and inspired by the pioneering work of the late Bill Stumpf, Embody was designed to have a positive impact on the body. By combining empathy-driven design with scientific research into posture, movement, and circulation, Herman Miller created a chair that supports natural movement, balance, and well-being throughout the working day.
The Embody Chair was born from an ambitious idea explored in the design studios of Herman Miller by designer Jeff Weber and the late Bill Stumpf. Their goal was not simply to reduce discomfort, but to fundamentally improve the experience of sitting.
As modern work became increasingly technology-driven, both designers recognised the physical challenges caused by prolonged sitting, challenges they experienced themselves. Guided by empathy and firsthand understanding, they questioned whether a work chair could actively support health rather than merely limit harm. This mindset shaped every stage of Embody’s development, laying the foundation for a chair that blends deep research, human insight, and purposeful design.
Expert insight and scientific validation were central to the development of the Embody Chair. The early hypotheses were explored through extensive collaboration with ergonomists, medical professionals, and researchers, who helped shape a programme of experiments to determine whether a truly health-positive work chair was possible.
Following the passing of Bill Stumpf in 2006, Jeff Weber carried the project forward, translating Stumpf’s original vision into a fully realised design. As Embody’s lead designer, Weber refined both the chair’s form and function through repeated testing and evaluation.
Research included laboratory studies focused on kinematics, preferred seating postures, pressure distribution, seated task performance, and metabolic response. Feedback from experts sitting in early prototypes informed continuous improvements, ensuring that every design decision was supported by measurable data. This rigorous process confirmed Embody’s ability to support movement, balance, and well-being throughout long periods of sitting.
As the Embody Chair evolved, creating a healthy connection between the body and the chair became the central focus. A series of prototypes was developed and assessed by experts, with detailed feedback shaping each refinement. These real-world evaluations ensured the chair responded naturally to the way people sit, move, and shift throughout the day.
Researchers conducted in-depth laboratory testing, examining kinematics, pressure distribution, preferred postures, seated task performance, and metabolic response. This evidence-led approach confirmed that Embody could actively support circulation, encourage movement, and maintain balanced posture over long periods of sitting.
By combining scientific research with human-centred design, Herman Miller created a chair that doesn’t just support the body, it works with it, forming a healthy, intuitive connection between user and environment.
This philosophy sits at the core of the Embody Chair. For designers Jeff Weber and the late Bill Stumpf, design was never just about form; it was about creating meaningful, human connections.
