Herman Miller Caper Design Story

The Herman Miller Caper Chair was created to support the evolving needs of modern workplaces. Designed by Jeff Weber, it reflects a shift towards more agile, collaborative environments where furniture must be easy to move, store, and adapt.

Designed for Flexibility

The Caper family was built to accommodate a wide range of people, spaces, and activities. From quick meetings to collaborative sessions, the chair adapts easily to changing needs.

Comfort Through Simplicity

Rather than relying on complex mechanisms, the Caper Chair delivers comfort through smart material use and ergonomic shaping. Its flexible seat and back provide support while allowing natural movement.

  • The Tilt Mechanism: A finely tuned gear system automatically adjusts tension, balancing recline based on the sitter’s vertical force.
  • Suspension Integration: To achieve seamless support, the team developed a system of tiny “teeth” that clip the suspension material into the frame. This ensures tautness, durability, and even pressure distribution across the body.
  • Industrial Craftsmanship: Every detail is intentionally visible and “readable,” so even non-engineers can intuitively understand how the chair supports them.

Built for Movement and Storage

Lightweight construction and stackable designs make the Caper Chair ideal for dynamic environments. Whether used in classrooms, event spaces, or in offices as executive furniture, it can be easily rearranged or stored when needed.

Colourful and Versatile

Available in a palette of fresh, lively colours, the Caper Chair brings energy to any space. Neutral tones offer a more subtle look, while brighter colours can help create engaging, collaborative environments.
