Tips to Combat Tiredness at Work

Ever feel so exhausted that merely getting through the work day seems impossible? It happens, and constant fatigue is extremely common among workers. If you’re looking for some strategies that will help you combat tiredness and feel more energetic, follow these tips we have put together for you.

Keep hydrated
Dehydration is often one of the main causes of tiredness, and it’s not easy to recognise it as such. So make sure you always have some water on hand and drink it regularly throughout the day. Aim for around 2 litres a day, depending on your age, weight, and environment. This will not only help you combat tiredness but avoid headaches, increase alertness and concentration.

Steer away from coffee
Coffee might seem like a lifesaver when you wake up feeling exhausted, but, in the long run, it actually ends up making you feel more tired, and can cause headaches. If you like hot drinks, switch regular coffee for a decaffeinated one, or for herbal teas. If you really can’t function without coffee, then make sure you don’t drink more than 3 cups a day, and avoid it in the later hours of the day if you want to get a good night’s sleep.

Get some exercise in
Sitting at your desk all day is exactly the opposite of what you should be doing if you feel tired. Physical exercise gets your blood flowing, and helps reduce anxiety and stress, so, even if you feel like you have no energy, force yourself to go for a walk during your lunch break, choose the stairs over the lift, and walk or cycle to work if you can. Don’t forget to get up, stretch, and get some steps in every hour. Your body – and your mind – will thank you!

Snack regularly
Snacking regularly, rather than starving yourself until your next big meal, is a great way to keep your energy levels up throughout the day. Biscuits and cake might seem tempting, but always make sure what you eat is healthy – sugary treats initially give you a boost of energy, but it fades away quickly and leaves you feeling sluggish. So reach for some fruit instead, which will make you feel refreshed and energetic thanks to its natural sugars, fibres and vitamins. Nuts are also a great option, as they are full of proteins and omega 3s.

Fit in a power nap
If you can fit a quick power nap in your schedule, then you might say goodbye to your constant fatigue for good. Napping for around 20 minutes, and no longer than 30, can give you a boost of energy and improve your concentration, but make sure you take your nap around lunchtime so that you’ll still be able to sleep at night.

Mind your posture
Sitting in an incorrect position for hours every day is not only bad for your back, but it leads to an increase in fatigue and stress. So keep your shoulders relaxed, don’t lean to the side or slouch, and make sure your feet are firmly planted on the floor.
